Package: fabric
Version: 2.5.0-0.2
Severity: important

Hi Python Modules People (and Fabric maintainer)!

It seems that the Fabric package is not very well maintained
anymore. The most recent major release (2.x, ie. 2.5.0) was uploaded
as a NMU in dec 2019, and never acknowledged. The most recent upload
from the maintainer is from 2017.

There's now been a new upstream release (2.6.0) and it seems it's
going to miss bullseye by quite a mark, because it's too late for the
freeze.

But it's not too late to rescue fabric! Upstream activity seems to
have returned, and it would be nice to upload newer versions to
Debian, and take care of that (one) bug report.

I have taken up packaging of invoke, under the python team umbrella,
and i'd be happy to do so with fabric as well, keeping the current
maintainer (asb, in cc) as uploader of course.

This procedure is done, in good faith, under the "Package Salvaging"
provisions of the developer reference, available here:

https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/pkgs.en.html#package-salvaging

It is considered that the following indicators fullfill section
5.12.1:

 * two NMUs in a row
 * bug without an answer
 * new upstream release

In 21 days, if there's no (negative) response to this bug report, I
will consider it is okay to start working on salvaging this package
and will probably upload a 2.6.0 to experimental (since we'll be in a
freeze then) into the DELAYED/7 queue.

I hope everything is in order and finds you well! :)

a.
