I am trying to play a BBC RTSP stream which Helix player claims to
support:

rtsp://rmlivev8.bbc.net.uk/farm/*/ev7/live24/radio5/live/r5_tl_int_g2.ra

It doesn't work.

Ack. RTSP is a streaming protocol, Real Media (e.g. Real Audio and Real
Video) are media codecs. Helix Player does support RTSP. but does not
support the proprietary Real codecs.

If you want to play Real encoded media, you have to, as Helix Player
already stated to you correctly, either get Real Player, or use xine
(xine has 'limited' support of Real Media only, which means, that just
about everything works, but some strange and rare DRM settings do not).
