i used the current d-i to install sarge on an IBM 7043-260 (POWER3, CHRP,
2 cpus).
the partition table created by the d-i is of type msdos and since the automatic
partitioner doesn't reserve a partition for yaboot i had to do it manually.
i choosed sda1 as the yaboot partitiona and sda5 (a logical partition) as the
root one. i run yabootconfig with success and then ybin after
costomizing yaboot.conf again with success.
the machine didn't boot and after some searching in the docs and on the
net i found out a thread where it is stated that yaboot only boots from
msdos primary partitions, not from logical ones [1].
after repartioning and reinstalling i have a working system (yaboot on
sda1 and root on sda2).
i'm not an expert of powerpc so i might have missed the bit of
information that warns against this limitation of yaboot, but i consider a
bug that ybin doesn't complain about an invalid partition being used as
root.

yaboot was last released with Debian 8 (jessie) in April 2015
and was removed from the Debian archive afterwards.
I'm closing the remaining bug reports now.
