Package: makedev
Version: 2.3.1-74
Severity: normal

option -V points user to /usr/share/doc/makedev ;
manpage does not mention this directory,
(nor does it mention this commanline option).

manpage has no FILES section,
which is especially a pity because manpage mentions 'file called =20
DEVICES',
and locate can't find that file (on my system).
it looks like MAKEDEV itself cant find that file either,
as 'MAKEDEV -n update' generates a very long list of what it would =20
  do,
of which i only read last line :
         create hdd20 b 22 84 root:disk 0660
           but ls -al /dev/hdd20
             brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 84 Mar 14 2002 /dev/hdd20
so there seems to be a bug here somewhere.

note about possibly returned errors would be better placed in an
=20
               ERRORCODES section or
               somesuch,
as this would make it much clearer that 'description' is
rather =20
                 terse.

                 @ hd{a..l} it says :
                     AT (ide) hard disks.
Device hdx provides access to whole disk,
                               with partitions being hdx{1..63}.
For i386, four primary partitions are hdx1
through hdx4,
                                       with logical partitions being numbered
from hdx5 though =20
                                       hdx20.
BUG (A primary partition can be
made into an extended partition,
                                              which can hold 4 logical
partitions).
                                                 Other architectures may not
differentiate partition types.
                                                     By default, devices for 20
logical partitions are made.
                                                         Kernel supports up to
63 partitions per device.
                                                             Drives hda and hdb
are two on primary controller,
                                                                   hdc and hdd
are two drives on secondary controller.
                                                                     These
devices can also be used to access IDE CDROMs.

Additional devices hd {e..l} can be created.

                                                                         a
primary partition can be made into an extended partition,
                                                                           and
can then be subpartitioned, but can no longer be used as a normal =20

partition itself.
                                                                           if
there can be 4 primary partitions, each of which can hold 4 logical =20

partitions,

and kernel supports 63 partitions per device,

then does that mean i also have 43 illogical partitions ? :-)

seriously, there can be more than 4 partitions in an extended =20

partition,

currently my disk has 49 partitions, named /dev/hda1 through /dev/=20

 hda50

and free space, and there is no /dev/hda4 (atleast cfdisk doesnt =20

     show it).

it might also be interesting to mention that hda is master device on =20

     primary controller,

while hdb is slave device (which therefore can't interrupt, it must =20

       poll), afaik.

         (and hdc/hdd are similar)

this makes it easier to identify which disk has which name, by =20

           looking at cables.

(but it may be a bit offtopic)

is there a way to only create devices for which partitions exist ?

if so, i would like a SEE ALSO entry for it :-)

i thought i had read (in kernel-traffic most likely)

that devices were going to be called /dev/hda/1 etc. ?

                 (i am using a 2.6 kernel)
