In Twitter, I found the following bug report for the saods9 package:

I've pinpointed the issue specifically to the second to last command
"-saveimage jpeg... etc." When I run the program, I get an error
stating "An error has occurred while creating." When I run the commands
without the saveimage command, it opens DS9 with all the
proper settings, however directly attempting to save the image in the
GUI doesn't work either (resulting in the same error). I've tried it
both in the default environment and in a new virtual environment. This
was using DS9 installed using the command "sudo apt install
saods9."
This is most probably a missing
package require img::jpeg
during the initialization.
