This behaviour can be easly verified by trying to run the following simple systemtap script: sudo stap -e 'probe syscall.open{print(filename."\n")}' All filenames will come out as '<unknown>'. If instead of printing the content of 'filename' you print the value of it's pointer ($filename) all you'll get is a silly pointer reference to 0x5. This is not a bug in systemtap, per see, but rather a bug in gcc 4.0.x. But since this is the default compiler in sid now systemtap should try to aliviate this issue depending on gcc (version >=4.1) or conflict with known buggy gcc versions.
