ntpd is unable to open and update log and drift files.
Messages in syslog are of the type:
Jul 2 13:38:28 lady-armanoid ntpd[23109]: can't open
/var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift.TEMP: Permission denied
Jul 2 13:38:31 lady-armanoid ntpd[23109]: can't open
/var/log/ntpstats/peerstats.20060702: Permission denied
Even when in the update an info screen claimed that ntpd runs now as ntp
user, it apparently still runs as root:
$ ps ax -f | grep ntpd
root 26292 1 0 14:06 ? SLs 0:00 /usr/sbin/ntpd
The log files and the directory /var/log/ntpstats are owned by user ntp.
/etc/ntp.drift is owned by root.
