Followup-For: Bug #1104804
Dear contributors,
After a thorough analysis of the freetube program, I have
determined that it is
currently not possible to package it for Debian, the main reasons
being:
FreeTube is a privacy-focused YouTube client built using Electron,
a framework
that combines Chromium (for rendering web content) and Node.js (for
system
integration). Despite its utility, packaging FreeTube for Debian
faces insurmountable
technical and policy challenges.
Debian lacks an electron package in main due to licensing and
maintenance burdens.
FreeTube would need to:
- Support a non-Electron backend (e.g., pure WebExtensions).
- Remove hard Chromium dependencies.
Regards,
Manuel Guerra
