After upgrading, logging into a gnome session appears to start a
complete session (panel, nautilus, etc.) but the window manager is
missing. While it is possible to add a windowmanager (metacity) as a
start up appliaction this is not feasible for 200+ users. (This system
is accessed via ltsp from a group of machines in a lab setting). 

There seems to be no pertinent information in the .xsession-error file:
