Dear Maintainer,
according to the actual version of tzdata /etc/timezone is removed
because it was redundant to /etc/localtime. But gnome-shell still uses
/etc/timezone:
The following steps depend on beeing in Germany!
* start a gnome session
* start settings
* select System -> Time and Date
* select auto time zone
Expected:
the right time is shown (Europe/Berlin - CET)
Actual:
the time Europe/Busingen (UTC!), so the clock is one hour behind.
If you symlink /etc/timezone to /etc/localtime everything works fine.
So I asume that gnome-shell still uses /etc/timezone but should use
/etc/localtime. No changes with tzdata 2025c-3 (unstable).

I am closing this issue because I believe it is actually a duplicate
of https://bugs.debian.org/1119919
You can set your timezone to Berlin directly to avoid the issue until
it is properly fixed.
I think /etc/timezone causes issues in some apps and it is helpful to
have only one file for determining the timezone.
