2) Starting screen with 'screen -dm; screen -r'
This works, but we have lost some capabilities, for example the editor
jed (apt-get install jed) no longer shows text in bold, and pressing
'control and s' no longer initiates isearch (also true in emacs) - you
can work around this by pressing '^A s' where A is the escape
character. It seems that in method 2, screen uses a much reduced
TERMCAP:

Hi,
`screen -dm` starts without an attached display, so screen has no
concrete
terminal capability context to inherit. In that mode, it uses
conservative
defaults for TERMCAP; richer capabilities are only known once a real
display
is attached. This is longstanding upstream behaviour, and SCREENCAP is
the
documented override for detached startup.
