Package: ecryptfs-utils
Version: 87-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software
Hi,
I apologize if this bug should have filed against xdm instead.
When ecrypfs-utils is set up to automount, xdm seems to work fine, but the
window managers launched by it won't allow keyboard input.
Steps to reproduce:
* Install ecryptfs-utils and xdm (configure it as your DM, of course)
* Set up an automounted ecryptfs with ecryptfs-setup-private
* Reboot
After those steps, you can log in and verify that keyboard input doesn't
work. If you go to a VT and remove ~/.ecryptfs/auto-mount then reboot, it's
fixed.
It looks like the problem is in Ubuntu too [1]. According to [2], it doesn't
happen with gdm. I think it could be related to PAM, maybe. It also looks
WM-agnostic [3], although I didn't try a different WM.
Please let me know if there's anything else I should test.

Hi,
This bug has been tagged moreinfo since 2011 and the 2014 ping got no
reply, and I could not find an xdm-side cause: xdm writes ~/.Xauthority
only after pam_open_session(), so after pam_ecryptfs has mounted the
home directory. xdm has since been updated from 1.1.10 to 1.1.17, and
1:1.1.17-3 now also sets up a fresh session keyring with pam_keyinit
before the common-session modules run.
I'm closing this report. If you (or anyone) still see missing keyboard
input after logging in through xdm with an ecryptfs-encrypted home on a
current system, please reopen it and include /var/log/xdm.log,
~/.xsession-errors and your /etc/pam.d/common-{auth,session}.
Best,
Boyuan Yang
