--- Begin Message ---Package: iproute Version: 20010824-8 Severity: normal Hi! I've just discovered the possibility to rename a device: ``ip l s eth0 foo'' -- both nice feature, and something I thought the Linux networking scheme lacked! Now to the problem: Although it is possible to give a device a name of an empty string (""), ip(8) subsequently can't work with such a name. ifconfig(8), on the other hand, seems to work OK: | Script started on Fri Dec 12 15:58:56 2003 | # ip l | 1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue | link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00 | 7: ppp0: <POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST,NOARP,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 3 | link/ppp | # ip l s ppp0 name "" | # ip l s "" name ppp0 | SIOCGIFINDEX: No such device | # ifconfig "" up | # ip l s "" down | Not enough of information: "dev" argument is required. | # ifconfig "" down | Script done on Fri Dec 12 16:00:18 2003 Of course, killing pppd/removing & inserting kernel module would do. However, if the driver is built in the kernel,... If an empty string is a valid name for a network device, ip(8) should have no problem working with such. If it is a dubious or even dangerous name, or (oh, no!) an invalid one, ip(8) should emit a warning, not assign it unless --force'd to, or refuse to assign such at all. ifconfig(8)s ability to deal witch such a name should be taken into consideration.
