I use newsx with the --inn --rnews options to feed incoming
messages to rnews. (I'm using inn 1:1.7.2-19). This works, except
that incoming articles containing lines beginning with a "." character
have that "." doubled by the time they appear in my newsreader.

I believe that this is because newsx is reading an article
by NNTP (which means that leading dots are always doubled)
and then not removing these doubled dots before passing it
to rnews (which does not expect such doubled dots).

[At least, the rnews manpage says nothing about doubled dots,
and the newsx source code doesn't attempt to undouble dots.]

(I do find it hard to believe nobody else has seen this, so
perhaps I'm just doing something wrong?)

Peter Maydell

Description:
newsx - An NNTP client for posting and fetching news
Closes: 149783
Changes:
 newsx (1.4pl6.0-2) unstable; urgency=high
 .
   * Add new patch 20_potential_bfr_overflow.diff, which fixes a
potential buffer overflow in logmsg.c, see message
     <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> on newsx-announce ML.
   * Fixed newsserver-software autodetection in wrapper-script, checking for
files in /usr/share/doc/ is against policy 13.3. Check for some unique
files and directories newsx is really using instead. Thanks to Steve
     Langasek for the suggestion.
   * newsx did not escape and de-escape lines starting with a dot
correctly (rfc977, 3.10.1: "...with lines starting with a period
in the original text having that period doubled during transmission.")
Thanks to Alfredo Amontagna for finding this bug.
   * Make /usr/share/doc/newsx/examples/addgroup.all work on Debian.
The check for inn/inn2/cnews is not nice yet. (closes: #149783)
