While binary backward compatibility is ok, source compatibility is not
guaranteed anymore, and all callback functions have to be rewritten to
meet the new API.  That leads to build failures in all programs which
have gcc's pedantic checks enabled.

This isn't going to be fixed.  Packages that are using the -pedantic check
will just have to update.
