Package: amanda
Version: N/A; reported 2004-02-10
Severity: wishlist

I have reciently come accross two interesting articles about amanda:

http://security.uchicago.edu/tools/gpg-amanda/email_to_amanda_hackers
http://amanda.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/348.html

These both allow a user to extend amanda (one by encrypting dumps, the
other allows for pre & post dump scripts) by replacing gzip or tar by
amanda specific wrapper scripts.

This requires a recompillation of amanda.

I was wondering if amanda could be compiled with
GZIP=/usr/lib/amanda/debian-gzip-hook ./configure ...
--with-gnutar=/usr/lib/amanda/debian-tar-hook

and the post-inst could symlink (if no preexisting file)
/usr/lib/amanda/debian-gzip-hook and /usr/lib/amanda/debian-tar-hook to
/bin/gzip
and /bin/gtar respectivly.

This would keep the existing configuration if the local admin does nothing
but
would allow the local admin to implement these cunning extensions to
amanda
without the need to recompile.

If I were to get a patch together for this might you accept it?

Thanks
Alex Owen

I believe that Amanda 2.5 and later contain adequate hooks to make this bug
report obsolete. Closing with no further action taken.
