version: 1.1.2-6
severity: minor
Hi!
I do not know if this concerns totem, xine or ffmpeg, but I believe this
is the right address for the bug. ;)
However, totem-xine does not play MS WMV 8 encoded files without this
scarry w32codecs package installed. I think I have read somewhere that
xine should be able to play those files using the built-in ffmpeg
codecs. And what confuses me even more is that I believe that it once
HAS played those files in the past, but I am not sure about this... :/
Could this have to do with xine's linking to external libavcodec? Has
there anything been disabled?
Well, as I said before my memories may fool me. Or maybe I have
misunderstood mixed up WMV 8 and WMV 9 (although this is not supported
at all, isn't it?)...
What do you think about it?
Nice greetings,
Fabian

No, you are right, this is the right package :)

I'm pretty sure you're mixing up WMV8 and WMV9. the former is indeed
supported by xine 1.1.2, the later will be supported in 1.1.3. I
uploaded cvs snapshots to experimental, you might want to try these
packages. With them, I can watch both WMV8+9 packages on my amd64
machine (for which no w32codecs will work).
Btw, you are right that libxine1_1.1.2-6 indeed uses the same libffmpeg
as vlc, and that vlc is currently able to play WMV9 while
libxine1/unstable current cannot. The reason is because there are some
additional patches needed in xine to make it actually use the new
codecs. These patches are not in xine 1.1.2, because they would break
the build with the internal ffmpeg xine ships (but that's not used for
the build anyway). Confused? You're right. it is.
