Hi, I am not sure exactly what information to include so if you need
more please ask. I have experimented with linux and debian for several
years but my understanding is still quite limited; please bear with me.
This is a new installation of Woody 3.0r0 from cdrom using only disc 1.
The host system is a Compaq Precision Workstation SP700: dual 450MHz
Xenon, 256 mb ram (100MHz ECC SDRAM), Diamond FireGL1 AGP vid card,
onboard sound (ESS AudioDrive), NIC & SCSI controller. Mouse and
keyboard are PS/2;mouse is 3 button Dell (Logitech MouseMan M-S38), keyb
is a Digital model RT6856T. Sound card is disabled in BIOS. [is there
some app to run which can capture the detailed system info?]
The system boots up to the GDM login okay. Both mouse and keyboard work.
After I login, using any one of the session options, and before the
dektop finishes loading[0], both keyboard and mouse stop responding. The
mouse cursor stops moving and the keyboard freezes to the point that num
and caps lock don't do anything. My only recourse at this point is to
hard boot the machine.
0. In the KDE login all of the little icons are lit up and the last
status message is something similar to "finished loading KDE desktop".
In the GNOME (un)Failsafe login the bottom toolbar loads and two,
perhaps three, icons are present. Another toolbar loads at the top right
but it looks incomplete (no icons, no smooth edges).
Neither of the failsafe login mechanisms are failsafe. The only way I
can login to this machine is to Ctrl-Alt-F1 in order to get a text
console. SSH from a remote machine fails with unable to connect; the
machine fails to respond to a ping request.
The mouse is mounted as /dev/psaux with gpm and set to raw repeat. Xfree
is pointed to /dev/gpmdata. Initially Xfree was using /dev/psaux too.
I also tried uninstalling gpm altogether via the expedient of
'apt-get remove gpm'. There is no apparent change between the settings.
The Xserver is a binary downloaded from ATI, named
fgl1glibc22-X41-2.8.4.tgz. Is there a different Xserver I can try?
please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and thanks in advance for your
time.
