The option -I takes a "List of kernel version strings (as in KVERS)"
according to the man page. The meaning and format of KVERS is never
explained. I thought I might find it in the make-kpkg man page,
referenced at the bottom of module-assistant's man page. It doesn't
seem to be there.
uname -v says it gives the kernel version, but it says

which seems unlikely to be what's wanted.
Specifically, I guess the string is 2.6.16-2-k7-smp or some close
transformation, maybe omitting some info (e.g., 2.6.16?). (I know the
smp is obsolescent). Please say exactly what the format and level of
detail is.
Ah... /usr/share/doc/kernel-packages/README.modules actually
references KVERS, and also points you to
/usr/share/doc/kernel-packages/README.gz. I'm not entirely sure
what's going on even after reading those 2. What I'm looking for is
something like this:
"If you are using a packaged debian kernel with a name like
linux-image-2.6.16-2-k7-smp then KVERS is the whole last part of the
name: 2.6.16-2-k7-smp.
If you have built a package using make-kpkg then the kernel version is
the concatenation of (?) and the --append-to-version argument, but
not the --revision argument. If you look at the name of the resulting
deb, you can apply the same rule as in the previous paragraph.
If you built the kernel from non-Debian sources, then you're probably
not the kind to use module-assistant :) And you probably know exactly
what KVERS is (??)."
In general, the documentation leaves me wondering about exactly how
much magic is supposed to happen--for example, I would like to build
some modules for a kernel that I have yet to install. Will it just
pull in what's necessary, or do I need to help out? But I think this
general concern is already covered by #387607.
