/usr/sbin/sendmail only works with the root or daemon users. This breaks many aplications.
Seting suid solved the problem but is it this best way?
$ ls -l /usr/sbin/sendmail -rwsr-xr-x 1 root daemon 26328 2004-10-16 23:32 /usr/sbin/sendmail
On my system, it's suid and I didn't change that. (The suid-bit is neccessary because a sgid bit would not allow all what would be neccessary to get it to daemon group. I don't remember the reason exactly).
Do you have an idea why the suid bit was missing on your installation?

I've checked and on 2 of my 5 installations the suid bir was not set. I don't know why. Reinstalling the package solved the problem.
