By the first time you boot, do you mean when the usb stick is already plugged
in during boot? If so, then it's already recognized by the kernel/udev/hal etc
by the time your logging in gnome, so gvm justs mounts it..
When you plug it in later it has to go through the whole stack which can take
some time...
FWIW profiling the whole process to see where the exact delays are is something
on my TODO list.. But it could take some time before i get to it.
