I tested with the binaries from qemu-0.6.1-i386.tar.gz. I have confirmed that using those the problem also occurs if the tun interface is used. I did discover one interesting thing. Because I purged the Debian packages to make absolutely sure I was running the upstream binaries, my /etc/qemu-ifup was deleted. So the first time I ran the test I was using user mode networking by accident. DHCP in Debian Installer somehow set up the interface and to my surprise I got a working connection to the rest of my network.
