This can be changed in GNOME "Menus and Toolbars" capplet or in gtk settings. I don't think author will add this feature to the player itself, 'cause it's not very HIG compilant. In GNOME, run gnome-ui-properties, and change toolbar style there. In XFCE4 preferences there's also some capplet for this.
