FYI meantime, I found that I could work around the problem by
attaching my (non-PostScript) printer to a Windows machine and
changing the cupsys backend to the printer shared from that machine.
I submit print jobs to the Linux machine running Samba; if the job is
PostScript, it is converted with ghostscript; then it is sent to the
Windows printer.  For whatever reasons, this setup does not make 
smbd go bonkers.
