I changed my mind. A friend, on his amd64 box, has /.aptitude/. Aptitude must chdir to $HOME or getpwent(getuid) or getpwent(geteuid), whichever you prever. (Okay, so chdir isn't actually necessary, but whenever it references its preferences file it should not use the current directory, but something derived from the user's home directory.
