Hi! I've been doing some research on this bug (namely, talking in the #evolution channel about it).
These are the key points:
* Evolution gets mime information from gnome
* It does depend on: libgnomevfs2-0 (>= 2.8.3-7)
* As of gnome 2.8, the mime system in gnome changed to the
freedesktop standard.
* So it might be missing some associations and magic bits.
* The dependency on shared-mime-info is not versioned (it's an indirect
dependency, through libgnomevfs2-0 and then libgnomevfs2-common), and
there was at least one shared-mime-info that was broken upstream.
The steps to get to a solution now is to:
* ask what the mime type says in the mail source for the mime part
* and ask what version of shared-mime-info they have
So, I'm now pinging the three reporters on this matter.
