I'm now running a local package of 1.8.3, and, from brief usage so far, things do seem much improved. >From #651913, it appears I'm at least the fourth person to make an updated version of the package (oops), but we're stuck with 1.6.5 in unstable currently. Unfortunately from the changelog it appears that Rodrigo hasn't had much time for the package since 2009. The last two uploads were NMUs.
