Thanks to Johannes Ring, I have been made aware of this work-around (see http://lists.debian.org/debian-science/2012/03/msg00005.html): export OMPI_MCA_plm_rsh_agent=/bin/false Setting this environment variable makes mpi-based test suites run fine in a buildd chroot.
