Right. And each time I purged, the symlinks stayed around.

Maybe I should add that the Debian installation is located on a V-Server by 
Strato. I did not (and can not) install it from scratch, Strato provides 
installations I can select in the administration interface. I will contact 
them, asking whether they made a modification which might have this effect.
Sorry I did not mention this earlier, I didn't really think about it, nor can 
I imagine how their kernel modifications can affect python (the visualization 
technology they use means that I do not have control over the kernel, because 
it is shared amongst all users of a server).
