No, I think it would be a security risk if xdg-open supported that.
xdg-open is often used by browsers to open downloaded files, and in that
case would execute arbitrary code when invoked on a desktop file.

Usually, xdg-open invokes some other tool to actually open a file. For
example, it invokes gvfs-open if you are running Gnome. In the past,
these tools might have supported opening desktop files. And some might
still do (which is a bug, in that case).
