Tested on Ubuntu 12.04, but applies to Debian as well.
During wipefs I get the following error:
Executing: wipefs -a vg1/home
Command had non-zero exit code

This post says (and I can confirm this):
There seems to be 2 problems:
- wipefs argument should be /dev/vg0/var
- vgchange -a n should not be called before wipefs, as it prevents it
from seeing the partition
