They do, but in 2.4 threading was done in a completely different way when in 2.6. For the C world this resulted in a move from pthreads to the NPTL library, for sbcl this enabled the use of more complex features. The end effect is that it now only works for a 2.6 kernel, even 2.4 kernel that are patched to allow the use of the NPTL library seem to pose intermittend problems, so I decided it was better to err on the side of caution.
