Chromium browser seems to "helpfully" append extensions to the file names of certain file types it thinks it recognizes. For example, if I try to download the file, http://python.org/ftp/python/2.7.3/Python-2.7.3.tar.xz I end up with a file called 'Python-2.7.3.tar.xz.tar'.
