I would suggest that you have a issue with your system.

Of course geeqie is reading several files in /usr that are needed for it
to run. Namely the desktop files of all installed files that can be used
as external editor for an image. If this files are unreadable the system
might be broken at all.

For your original report. You only give a part of the strace that is not
helpful. I need to know which file the file descriptor 3 is attached to.
But I believe it is also connected with the wrong file rights in your
system.

To check the rights you may do:
   ls -l /usr/share/applications/mtpaint.desktop

For your second Mail I need a bit more informations where this bug
happens exactly. It seems for me that geeqie is complaining about a
broken XML. There is nothing geeqie can do with broken files. It can
only warn about them.

I close this bug as I believe it is not a bug. Feel free to provide more
informations about your problem.
