Hi. While the submitter of this bug has probably chosen another solution for his problem in the meantime (given how old the bug is), let me insert a shameless advertisement here none-the-less (just in case someone stumbles over the bug searching for something similar).
The parsechangelog script from libparse-debianchangelog-perl now (as of version 0.9) has a --count option which can be used to achieve what the submitter tried to do.
