There have been significant changes in iwl4965 and wpasupplicant 
meanwhile, even though especially pre-iwlagn still appear to be 
troubled under certain situations, it would be nice to know if this is 
still an open problem for you in >= wheezy (kernel 3.2 and 
wpasupplicant 1.0 ideally).

Please also make sure not to use driver=wext, as nl80211 is the 
strongly preferred method these days - and the default, if left 
unconfigured.
