The Debian Policy Manual, version 3.6.1.1, section 3.10.1 says:
Package maintainer scripts may prompt the user if
necessary. Prompting should be done by communicating through a
program, such as debconf, which conforms to the Debian
Configuration management specification, version 2 or
higher. Prompting the user by other means, such as by hand[7],
is now deprecated.
So you might try that method? I guess it's partly to assist i18n. Is
it worth it? Quite possibly, since it's a very popular package that's
likely to be around for a long time.
