This is the following upstream bug: almost all colors are bright if bright is used for "normal" which I reported 4 years ago. Since it lead to readability problems after a change in my xterm config, I've managed to fix it and submitted a patch on the upstream tracker. Note: I know almost nothing about the ncurses API, but this patch just adds consistency in the code.
