Actually, upon Emacs flavor installation (for example emacs-snapshot), /usr/lib/emacsen-common/emacs-install runs add-on package scripts (from /usr/lib/emacsen-common/packages/install/ and which are responsible to byte-compile for the given flavor) ordered according to Depends, but as w3m-el-snapshot is not in emms Depends, w3m-el-snapshot was byte-compiled after emms, thus the error message you reported.
