I'm trying to make myself useful by adding some tags and stuff to this bug. I'm not that great a Perl hacker, but as they note there, the real problem is to make a real fix to this without requiring 5.8, and upstream don't want to do that, understandably. However, since Sarge will be released with 5.8, I think it a good argument can be made for adding a Debian (or rather 5.8)-specific patch, which is indeed included in the upstream bug report. I hope the SA maintainers will be considering adding this patch to the Debian packages.
