Package: debian-reference-en
Version: 1.08-4
Severity: wishlist

The discussion of network setup doesn't explain how to setup the
FQDN. The only explanation of where it comes from is in 10.4 (DNS):

"To see what domain name is associated with the local host, use the
hostname --fqdn command. This prints out the first fully qualified
domain name that the resolver finds for the local hostname. [57]"

I also looked in the man pages without much luck.

I finally got a FQDN by putting an entry in /etc/hosts for my IP
address with a FQDN.

I realize the specifics may depend on the setup (e.g., DHCP ordinarily
provides one).  Maybe it usually comes with bringing the network up;
I'm in a highly retarded network environment. And some machines have
several FQDN's.

Even people without a NIC probably want a FQDN since, as I discovered,
one gets lots of warning messages without one.
