Those "checkers", AFAIK, are trying to upgrade the application binary, which Sylpheed's doesn't, it's just a notifier. Or you aren't using Sylpheed or you didn't care to look at the preferences of an unpatched one: there's no spam, any user not wanting this can disable it with a single checkbox click, forever.
