gnome-session fallback? So the old layout? I'm using the gnome-shell
with opengl. So you also didn't see the maximize button as shown in the
screenshot? 
I assume here that you can reproduce the error that you miss the
maximize button. If you have the all the time, this procedure written
here is useless for you. :S It basically describes what to do in order
to get the maximize button back.

Yepp, that's correct. However I was not able to resize it without moving
it a bit beforehand. Then I resized the window first a bit bigger than
it was, afterwards I shrink it manually to the smallest size possible.
Then I close it with a click on the "X" in the right top corner.
