This is not relevant unless you can first show that the needed kernel
modules have been loaded.

I wonder if serio hotplugging is not working... If you cannot try with a
2.6.13 kernel it would be very useful if you could get a boot time
events log. Add this to /etc/default/hotplug:

EVENTS_LOG='/dev/hotplug.log'

And uncomment the logger.agent line in
/etc/udev/rules.d/z55_hotplug.rules .
