Trying to support teTeX 2 directly in the package is probably not worth
it. People you use sarge (like myself) but want to work seriously with
(La)TeX ought to consider using the teTeX 3 backports from

deb http://people.debian.org/~frank/teTeX-3.0/ sarge main

They work very well for me, and it is one of the very few backports I am
using.
