Well, just applying the changes to the upstream source would have been
the smallest change, although admittedly possibly not as clean from a
later maintenance perspective.

Rule #1 on the freeze policy document says "please do not make changes
to the package that are not related to fixing the bugs in question"; I
guess one could stretch an argument that making it a separated patch is
related, but mmv as to how suitable it is.
