Too bad, this for all practical purposes means that I have to wait that
wheezy becomes the new stable - an estimated 9 month wait.
I don't see compilation as an option. If apt cannot solve the
dependencies, then I guess I will not be able to solve those problems
manually.

I am running squeeze (Debian stable 6.0.5). I tried to follow your
recommendation by using apt-pinning to install gramps 3.4.0-1, the
current version in testing (wheezy). Apt failed after about one hour
of trying to resolve dependencies, with this final output:
Resolving dependencies...

before giving up. I interpret this as that the wheezy version of
gramps does not find a stable configuration in squeeze.
Looking at the timeline of debian releases, and extrapolating the
current timeline of release-critical bugs published on the debian
website, the current testing will become stable probably in about 9
months. I hope you are not telling me that I have to wait that long
to get my bug issue resolved?
There are really only two options: compile a version for stable (not
difficult) or to upgrade to testing.

I notice that you are running wheezy (debian stable, 6.0.5). Can you
upgrade to testing so you can install a newer version of gramps?
There have been many bug fixes and new features implemented since the
version you are running.
Gramps crashes repeatedly when I try to save one particluar family record.
Computer restart to clean the memory doesn't help - still crashes at the
same location. This is the traceback that I got:
