Package: e2fsprogs
Version: 1.35-6

* This bug is not related to e2fsprogs, e2fsprogs only shows the symptom *

I have a problem with the sarge distribution.
There are two debian-install-sets:
rc3 and 31r0a
These names come from the install images.

I install on a blank disk, defaults on all questions (except keyboard layout).
Then I do a
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
This should upgrade everything to the "etch" distribution.
The /etc/apt/sources.list contains:
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib
It fails on rc3 but succeeds on 31r0a

The precise error message is:
E: This installation run will require temporarily removing the
essential package e2fsprogs due to a Conflicts/Pre-Depends loop. This
is often bad, but if you really want to do it, activate the
APT::Force-LoopBreak option
E: Internal Error, Could not early remove e2fsprogs

- just as stated in bug report #325834
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=325834

Some people say, that this is because I am upgrading from Woody
(previous debian release) - but this is NOT the case - I just made a
clean install of Sarge, and tried to update it - resulting in the
error explained above. There is no - and has never been - a Woody
version on this machine.

* The bug is genuine *

What should I do in order to avoid this message and do a successful upgrade?

With kind regards
