Actually, we still ship session-properties.desktop in gnome-session-common, but it is hidden (NoDisplay=true). Simply removing that flag might be all that is needed. The .desktop file currently has Categories=GTK;GNOME;Settings;X-GNOME-PersonalSettings; Maybe that needs further tweaking, too.
