Sorry, I think I was adding a red herring to my problem. The desktop
file is indeed correct (I must've stopped and started Emacs twice; the
second time the desktop file would have recorded the buffer's mode as
text-mode). However, although I have font locking on by default, the
.htaccess buffer isn't font-locked. Although, as I said, if I try the
same thing with /etc/apache/httpd.conf, it *does* work.
